We
are so excited to be able to share our story with others
facing the challenge and heartache of infertility. We
hope that our journey through infertility and Mia's
birth will give other couples the strength to endure the
long and difficult road of infertility.
Our story started in 2002 when my
husband and I celebrated our one-year anniversary and
decided it was the right time to start a family. We
began actively trying to conceive and when it didn't
happen right away we didn't worry too much since we were
both young and healthy. He was twenty-nine and I was
twenty-six. After six months or so, my gynecologist put
me on Clomid for four cycles with no results. Although
a little discouraged, we continued to try to conceive
and after a year of trying went to see a fertility
specialist. After all the initial workups, I was
diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). Our
outlook was good and we decided to move forward with
treatments, which included 5 cycles of intrauterine
insemination (IUI) and 3 cycles of in vitro
fertilization (IVF) one with
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injections
(ICSI)). During this time we only achieved one
pregnancy, which ended in an early miscarriage. We were
emotionally drained not to mention the financial burden
and it was difficult to remain positive as we watched
friends and family have babies all around us. We felt
very much alone in our situation and holidays became a
difficult time of year. Even still, we clung to the
hope of one day becoming parents.
Although we did not give up hope of trying to have a
child of our own, we decided we needed to take a break
from the treatments. I continued to chart temperatures
in hopes of conceiving naturally. During this time, my
husband's job moved us out of Texas to Tennessee. Once
settled here, we decided to begin fertility treatments
again. We started at another practice but after some
initial testing and consultations, we decided it was not
the place for us. We were then referred to Dr. Vasquez
by two different couples and decided to give him a try.
Our
first meeting with Dr. Vasquez went well and we left
cautiously optimistic because he seemed to be confident
about our chances of conceiving. The office staff was
friendly and helpful and because it was a more intimate
setting, we felt very comfortable with the office
staff. Dr. Vasquez did not diagnose me with PCOS but
instead thought I must have an
ovulatory issue. After discussing
our options with Dr. Vasquez, we decided on one more
cycle of IUI before moving onto IVF.
We started treatment in the fall of 2007 and on October
30, 2007, we got the amazing news that we were
expecting! We almost didn't believe it since we had the
procedure done with only one mature follicle. After
everything we had been through, it seemed surreal until
the first ultrasound when we were able to see the
heartbeat. I never could have imagined the joy of being
pregnant and carrying a child. With the help of Dr.
Vasquez, we were blessed with our daughter, Mia Elise on
June 28th 2008. She is the child we have
prayed for during the past 5 and ½ years and we are so
thankful to Dr. Vasquez and his office for the amazing
care they provided.
For all couples struggling in the midst of infertility,
please don't give up hope. Our precious Mia is proof
that dreams do come true!
